Dad stage 4 cancer

My dad was diagnosed on 19th of September with stage 4 lung Cancer, with secondary lymphoid chest cancer and brain cancer, hes now back in hospital with a fractured shoulder due to bine cancer, all this has come to light in 11 weeks,I don't know where to turn of what to do,my mums 70 with onset parkinsons and my brother has serious mental health problems with drink and cannabis addiction,I'm trying to hold the family together but feel I'm failing.

  • Have you got a respiratory nurse specialist or macmillan nurse you can contact for suoort? I found the macmillan nurses a great help with my mum who had same diagnosis. Hope you’re ok such a tough time.

  • Im so sorry to hear this. Firstly your not failing. I know it must feel like it. My Dad passed away in May after 9 weeks from being told he had a brain tumour. Use the Macmillan support, friends support. Any support offered to you x

  • Hi Chloe and welcome to the Cancer Chat forum.

I'm very sorry to hear your dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer last month and that you don't know where to turn or what to do.

This must be incredibly difficult, especially when you have your mum and brother to worry about as well, so it's completely understandable, and natural, to be feeling like this but I hope the replies you have received from some of our members already have helped you feel less alone and can give you some strength at this very testing time.

If you want to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses, they're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They are very easy to talk to and will do all they can to support you and help you figure out what your next steps will be.

I'm not sure from your post if your brother is getting any help or support with his mental health and addictions but if not, I hope these resources provided by the mental health charity Mind will be a good place to start.

Be kind to yourself Chloe, and remember that we will always be here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
