I lost my Mum and Dad

Hi

I lost my mum to leukaemia in august last year then my dad passed suddenly in May and my marriage ended after 17 years in January. I am 38 and feel completely lost in how I cope with all this. My children are the only thing that’s keeping me going as I promised my Mum I would be strong for them, but I am struggling. My Mum was my best friend, we seen each other and talked everyday and I feel like part of me has died with her. Within 6 weeks of finding out about Mums leukaemia she unfortunately passed away at the young age of 62 and I don’t know how to cope without her in my life

  • Hello TOEL07,

I am so sorry for all your losses, poor you it all happened in quick succession and must have been really traumatic. Children are very good at keeping us going but you must be really exhausted and drained after going through all this and it's normal that you feel you are struggling. You seemed to be very close to your mum so the shock of suddenly no longer being able to talk to her every day must be immense. It all happened so quickly too after only 6 weeks. You will find some helpful information on our website on Coping with Grief which will explain the range of feelings you might be experiencing after losing a loved one - you are definitely not alone and many members of our community have also sadly lost a parent to cancer. Some have also come to our site after also sadly losing both parents and I hope that you will hear their stories and that you can support one another here.

It might be helpful too to talk to your GP about how you are feeling as they may be able to offer you help and point you in the direction of valuable resources such as grief counselling.

We're thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.

    Best wishes,
