Doesn’t make any sense

Lost my dad last weekend.
He was in and out of hospital since April. Nobody could figure out what the problem was.
No cough, no trouble with breathing etc.

He was quite weak and unable to walk without a frame. Had a strange symptom of his leg and stomach pulsating at times.

Drs thought it may be cancer but we were never fully told which type.

We were all called to the hospital as he was going down hill fast. He suddenly had trouble breathing. Was told he had fluid around lungs/heart and enlarged gall bladder

I was there for an hour, he was talking but in quite a bit of pain in his stomach. Then suddenly he was gone

I don't understand how it happened so suddenly. The dr said small cell lung cancer with metastasis in the brain but as I say no cough, no pain. Nothing.

Official cause of death was pneumonia. I just don't understand. I feel like they could have and should have done more to drain fluid etc. It wasn't even discussed.

  • Hi Worrieddaughter,

I was just reading your post and wanted to offer you my sincerest and heartfelt condolences for your loss.

I can't begin to imagine how difficult this must be for you and your family, especially as everything happened so quickly, but our community are here for you and will offer their support and advice to you soon.

In situations like these, many of our members have found comfort and solace through bereavement counselling as it gave them a chance to work through their thoughts and feelings as well as the time to process everything that happened, so if you feel this is something that may help you at this time then do have a look at the services available on Cruse Bereavement Support and Sue Ryder.

I hope this NHS booklet that provides information for families following a bereavement is helpful as well.

I know there's nothing I can do or say that can take away the pain of your dad's passing but I hope it helps to know that you are not alone and that we're thinking of you at this very difficult time.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
