Chemotherapy, NHL & Psychosis

Hi there,

I am looking for advice regarding my mum, 53, who has recently been told she is in remission for Non-hodgkins lymphoma. She had 6 months of intense chemo and luckily for her 3 months is the mass and rraces had vanished.

However, since then my mum had been suffering with anxiety amd depression which everyone, herself included, thought was linked to cancer, lockdown and everything else going on in todays world. This soon became a series of mini psychotic breaks ending with a weekend of full on breakdowns. My mum became aggressive, distressed admitting she was hearingnvoices, being threatened and really paranoid of close family members.

This has resulted in her being admitted to a mental health hospital and eventually sectioned this weekend after escaping twice and still having episodes. We first thought that this may have started since she was told ahe was in remission, however since looking into her notes and diary in an attempt to look for more clues it may have actually started back in March when she started her chemo. She still has a mini for.of chemo injected once every 2 months.

Has anyone experiend something similar with a loved one and if so is there any advice they can give. It's horrible seeing her like this amd hearing her say some of the things she is saying and it would just be nice to have her back.

Thanks in advance

Ricky

  • Hello Magicr7m,

Weclome to Cancer Chat and I'm sorry to hear about your mum. I can imagine it must be horrible seeing her like that, but know that you're doing everything you can. I hope this information here might be useful for you and your mum and please continue to talk to the team looking after her, as they may be able to offer advice.

All the best to you both,
