Debilitating pain after Lobectomy

Hi!

My mum was diognosed with NSCLC a couple of months ago, after various scans etc it came back that it was a 9cm tumor contained to her left lung, so we could go ahead with a Lobectomy to remove the lower part of her left lung, as long as the tumor wasn't attached to her aorta (they couldn't tell from scans)

The operation was a success but after the operation my mum is in severe pain, Oxycodone liquid and oral tablets do not seem to help, they prescribed Amitryptaline and that hasn't helped either
She also has the lidocaine patches on

We called an ambulance for her a few days ago as the pain got so severe she refused to move, eat or drink and was just shaking in terrible pain

She's now in the hospital where she has been for the past couple of days, they tried her on Oramorph but this also didn't help
She's still refusing to eat or drink so they will be putting her on fluids, she can't even make it to the toilet and is refusing to get out of bed with pain

I am going out of my mind with worry, we thought we were over the worst with the pending op etc but she's more poorly than I've ever seen her, it's like she's aged 10 years overnight - she has a meeting with the pain team today to try and juggle her meds I believe

Can anyone please tell me if they have had a similar experience? anything I've read is that the pain is bad, but managable

  • Hello Vikki1993

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum is dealing with pain since her recent surgery. It sounds like it's been an incredibly difficult time for you both.

I hope that the meeting with the pain team went well?  It can take many months for things to settle so I hope that they've been able to start to get a better management plan in place for her.

If we've any members here on the forum who have been through a similar thing hopefully, they will reply to share their experience with you. In the meantime, if you want to talk to one of our team of nurses at any point you're welcome to call them. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that things improve for your Mum very soon.

    Best wishes,
