Lung cancer prognosis

Hi.

My nan has just been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer which has spread to her lymph nodes and spine. She's had recurring chest infections for months now and was diagnosed after being admitted with pneumonia with lots of fluid on the lungs. She's already had sepsis and a stroke in the past couple of years and has COPD so she has decided against treatment. We have been offered absolutely no timescale and have been given no idea what to expect. In the last few days I've noticed her voice has gotten really hoarse so am thinking this may be linked. I guess I'm just looking for people's experiences of stage 4 lung cancer so we knows what's coming.

  • Hiya love. I'm so sorry to hear about your Nan. I can only tell you of my own personal experiences. I nursed my mother with terminal lung cancer 25 years ago. She was in hospital for 2 weeks when she was diagnosed. They wouldn't give us a time limit or what to expect. It took along time for a full diagnosis staging etc as more tests were needed. I was devastated as well as scared as I didn't know what to expect. I finally after 20 days was told that she'd probobally got a few months. I gave up work & moved her in with me to look after her as soon as she was released from hospital. Within 2 hrs of arriving home from the hospital I received a call from the hospice. A lovely lady came to visit & within a hr she got my mother all the medication & equipment that she needed. Oxygen, nebuliser, antibiotics, steroids, effervescent tablets, dia morphine. I was so overwhelmed & she sat me down & went through step by step everything . All I can say is the home hospice teams are angels & my mother would have suffered for sure without them. She was comfortable & painless up until she passed. My sister was diagnosed with star 4 lung cancer with life expectancy 3 to 4 months. I again have taken a break from work & moved in to look after her. She was rushed to hosp as she couldn't breathe . After 2 days the doc said looks like copd on X-ray. The days after a ct scan showed a tumour in her lung. They said it was cancer & that she'd have 12 months & couldn't operate as she had a tumour on trachea & it had spread to her lymph nodes. She then had a biopsy & they said 6 months . She returned home & had a appointment 1 week later with the oncologist to be told she had 3 to 4 months but offered chemo to help ellieviate her symptoms & could extend her life upto 6 months. She's had 2 rounds of chemo & her symptoms are under control for now. All I can advise is to write down all of your questions before seeing the oncologist /doctor & ask if your Nan will be referred to your local hospice home care team if needed. (These people are fabulous & will also educate you on what to expect incl meds , equipment)

I wish you all the best & good luck.

  • Thanks Sidnie. Sorry to hear about your mum and sister. My Nan is unable to have further testing to determine what kind of lung cancer she has due to her breathing already being a bit iffy with the COPD. She's been referred to the respiratory team and the McMillan nurses who are coming out next week so will see what they say then. It's hard though as when my step dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer we were told 18 months without treatment and he lasted less than a year with so it would be a guessing game anyway I suppose.
