Dad's just been diagnosed with AML. Shocked and scared.

My dad has been diagnosed with AML this morning. I am devastated and in complete shock. Dad seems to think that he only has weeks. I haven't spoken to the consultant at length as they need to run tests. I just don't know what to do. I am so close to my dad. He's my best friend. I'm trying to stay positive and he says he will do his best. It's so hard with COVID and no visiting. I just want to go and see him.

  • Hello Jaheena

I'm sorry to hear that your Dad has been diagnosed with AML this week. It's understandable a difficult time for you all whilst you take this news on board. Presumably, as your Dad is still waiting on further tests there is information that the Consultant doesn't yet have to hand and hopefully, once these tests are complete you'll all have a better idea about your Dad's condition and what the next steps will be.

We do have some in formation on our website about acute myeloid leukemia but I wanted to let you know that if you'd like to talk to one of our team of nurses you're most welcome to call them. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any information, advice, and support that they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope that you have some news and reassurance soon. Keep in touch and let us know how your Dad gets on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you. We saw him yesterday and spoke with the consultant. There's still a bit of info outstanding but the prognosis isn't good as he has a pre existing condition of mastocytosis and he's 69. I think that's no age and want at least another twenty years with my darling Deedee, bit I don't think that's going to be possible except for a miracle. Miracles do happen though and I need to stay positive for him and my brother. Thank you for your reply x
