I’m a carer and desperately need for my mum

Hi

I'm new to the group. I really need advice as I don't know what to do? I'm looking after my mum who has stage 4 cancer. Found out in January declined treatment didn't feel strong enough. We knew it had spread, but had been fine until about 6 weeks ago. Went to the doctor who said she would refere her for an ultra sound. It took two week for the request to go through. In the mean time she has become severely Jaundice and itching non stop. Her urine is dark brown and has lost about 7 pounds. She's not really able to eat much so I've brought the ensure complete powder. She was able to walk to town and back while doing her shopping which in total is about 3miles, but now becomes breathless walking to the kitchen. My frustration is the doctor won't treat her until the results came through.

after nearly 5 weeks the results are through and basically confirmed what we already knew. The doctor turned around and said she won't treat her and will refer her back to the specialist she saw in January. She commented on the fact she had declined chemo three times. I said surely it doesn't stop the symptoms being controlled. The only thing she's been given is allergy tabs for the itching but really isn't helping.

Does any one have any ideas what to do? I ve requested the palliative care team step in but there not coming till next week Friday. The doctor couldn't give us time scale as to how long she might be waiting to see a specialist. I don't think it would help going back to the GP. At this rate I'm concerned she might not make it to see this specialist.

Thank you for reading and any ideas  xx

  • We had the same problem but I guess they need to know what they are dealing with as for the ensure your doctors can proscribe it for you

  • Hi there,

sorry to hear about your mother. I'm caring for mine stage 4 ovarian cancer and until mid Aug she was able to walk independently outside. This has all changed and she's in a lot of pain and can barely walk. We have a palliative care team to support but it seems that it all goes via the Gp to make anything happen like pain meds in our case. We're also waiting for a scan to see what is really going on. I'd tell the GP that they need to support you and your mother otherwise you're entitled to complain to the CQC. I've had to have quite a lot of 'frank' conversations to get anyone to take my mothers condition seriously. I wish you luck x
