Syringe drivers, unusual for 4 weeks or not?

Hi everyone, I hope I can post what I mean without this coming across wrong because as we all know there is such a wide range of emotions when it comes to cancer, my mum had a syringe driver put in nearly 4 weeks ago now, she has had brain cancer for 3 years and nearly a year ago we were told she had no more than a year to live as she needed palliative care at home since other treatments weren't working, my dad is her full time carer but I visit multiple times a week to help and see my mum, a doctor said nearly a month ago she had weeks to live and syringe drivers were fitted the next day, this was nearly 4 weeks ago, I really thought at the time she'd have passed by now, how long can a person really last on drivers and is this abnormal? She has slept for the last week most of the day and barely eats, it's mentally and emotionally draining wondering if everytime I visit will it be the last time. She's unresponsive, doesn't speak to anyone anymore and I hate seeing her like this, I'm truly grieving for someone who is still alive

  • Hello DarcyC

I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum's situation. It's obviously incredibly difficult for you all and perfectly understandable that you're struggling with things at the moment. I think many of our members here will understand how this kind of situation can be draining and leave you feeling exhausted.

I'm presuming that your Mum has a palliative care team or District nurse team calling in regularly to monitor things and support your parents. Do have a chat with them if you're able to as they will be best placed to try and give you some idea about how Mum's condition is progressing.

Alternatively, you're most welcome to call our nurses for some support and advice. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040 and I know they will be happy to talk things through with you.

    Best wishes,
