Struggling to deal with his moods

Hi all

Hubby has NSCLC stage 4 that has met to liver and spleen and more recently his other lung, spine and fluid in abdomen

He's 18 months from original diagnosis, has had chemo  immunotherapy  more chemo and targeted treatment (which was damaging his liver) so he's been off all treatment since April.

We're normally a happy couple, in our 50s and married 34 years.  But this last week his mood has been very down. He is struggling to eat, breathing is a problem and I'm just not sure what to do.  We saw palliative Dr last week, he has oxygen machine, but we are waiting until 1st September to hear the outcome of the joint Drs review as to next steps

Talking about memories upsets him,  talking about the future ....  well that's hard too, so we dont   talking about our kids and grandson hurts him too.    He doesn't want people to stay over   doesn't want to go out to dinner   struggles chatting due to the cough , so I end up entertaining friends who do pop by, and it's not me they want to spend time with really!

Oh I don't know what to do or say to help him

  • I'm very sorry for the difficulties you and your husband are facing at the moment Snoopy. It must be very tough but our community are here for you and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer their thoughts and advice.

Do be sure to keep an eye on your husband's mood as he may be starting to become depressed. I hope this information we have on our website about cancer and depression will help you figure out if this is the case but if you'd like to talk things through with our cancer nurses then do give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to support you at this time.

Caring for someone with cancer can be very rewarding but also very challenging so it's really important that you take some time, if you can, to give yourself a little TLC and I hope these tips and advice on our website can help.

Wishing you both all the best for next week Snoopy.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
