Mscc, primary kidney cancer with bone cancer mets

My husband (57) was diagnosed with primary kidney cancer ten days ago. He's also got MSCC and bone mets in his ribs. He's had 2 bouts of radiotherapy and is scheduled for three more. We're all stunned by this news but he seems oblivious to it all. He's saying he's going back to work even though his right arm is paralyzed and he needs a neck brace to support his spine. He's also on slow release morphine, Oramorph and steroids. Do we all go along with his attitude and pretend it's not serious?

  • Hello Oobyscooby1,

I am sorry to hear about your huband's diagnosis. I hope that the radiotherapy treatment is going well. It seems that your poor husband is in denial at the moment about it all and that he is trying to carry on as normal even when it is impossible really for him to go back to work now.

It's really hard to know what to do and how to react in a situation like this. You obviously don't want to shatter his hopes but equally you don't want to go along with what he is saying and promise him things that you know may not happen.  It's difficult to find the right balance so perhaps the best thing to do is to simply be there for him and to listen to him but without commenting too much on his work situation at the moment. It will soon become clear to him I suspect that he won't be able to go back to work immediately. It really is a tricky one...

If you would like to talk to one of our cancer nurses about this, feel free to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I will now let our members come and say hello and share their own similar experiences with you - I hope they will have some good suggestions for you to help you deal with this difficult situation.

    Best wishes,
