Sickness onset weeks after final chemo

Hi all, My mum had her 6th and final round of chemo three weeks ago (following a hysterectomy due to womb cancer). This week she's suddenly started feeling consistently very sick.

She didn't have much sickness as such during the chemo cycles, the most similar side effects that she had were loss of appetite for normal food and couldn't eat much quantity of the things she did find paletable. She never had this kind of frequent bouts of vomiting. On Wednesday she was prescribed Ondansetron, Famotidine, Omeprazole, and vit B to manage these symptoms. She had been complaining about her stomach not feeling right since Monday. Is sickness common weeks after chemo, or do anti-sickness tablets take a long time to become effective?

My mum lives in Sri Lanka where Covid is rampant so taking her again to a hospital is a huge risk which we'd rather not take if these are normal symptoms. There is no 111 equivalent to call here for help and advice.

  • Hello MagratGarlick,

I am sorry to hear that your mum has been feeling very sick in her final rounds of chemotherapy. I hope that the anti-sickness tablets are starting to kick in. Sickness is a common side effect of chemotherapy treatment and the sickness and cancer drugs page on our website contains helpful tips to help her manage and reduce sickness. These range from various methods she could use alongside her anti-sickness medication to trying various things that could help like ginger.

If none of this seems to work or make a difference or if she is unable to drink because of the severe sickness, it might be worth contacting your mum's doctor or specialist nurse for advice on how to best deal with this. You don't need to take her to hospital unless it is an emergency especially if covid is rampant in Sri Lanka but it may be worth ringing her doctor and discussing this just to see if they have any helpful advice. You could also mention that she has been complaining about her stomach and has not been feeling right since Monday and whether they need to examine her or if this is linked to the sickness she has been having. It must be hard though for you to deal with all that especially if you live far away from your mum. Is there anyone by her side who could help get in touch with her GP if she isn't well enough to do it herself at the moment?

I hope your mum gets over this severe sickness, regains some strength and that her treatment proves to be successful.

    Best wishes,
