Neck and skull tumours

Hello,

My dad was diagnosed with cancer in March 2021, it was confirmed it was in his stomach, lungs and two tumours in his neck. After 3 sessions of chemotherapy they discovered tumours at the base of his skull and told us Chemo would no longer work, he was offered radiotherapy but decided he didn't feel fit enough so has just been receiving end of life care at home.

After talking to the Macmillan nurse last week she told me my dad won't pass the "normal way" that we should prepare for 3 things.

1. He may become paralysed from the neck down

2. If the tumour affects a vessel he could bleed out

3. Internal bleed

she advised all will be quick and not to phone an ambulance just to make sure he's comfortable. I am my dads only support other than lunch time nurses. I just want to know if anyone has had this before and what signs of any of the three options there may be? My dad has chosen not to be told his diagnosis so he isn't aware of any of this but I am constantly panicking something is going to happen, he's refused the hospital and the dr said without his consent they can't make him which is okay as I don't mind caring for him I just want to be prepared.

  • Hello CDuber

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's diagnosis. It sounds like it's been a difficult time for you both and I can understand that you're feeling anxious about how things may progress over the coming weeks.

It's good to hear that you have some support from Macmillan and that there are nurses calling in at lunchtimes. Don't be afraid to ask for more support from them if you need it with caring for your Dad.

In the meantime, I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat with one of our team of nurses. It can often help to talk things through with someone and I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support that they can. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

You're welcome to post here on the forum if reaching out for support here is helpful. I'm sure that the community will do all they can to support you.

    Best wishes,
