Mesothelioma

Hi, my dad was diagnosed with mesothelioma in October 2020. He's had an operation in November to remove half of one of his lungs. He's not been well since the operation. He's now started immunotherapy, he's had 2 rounds but feeling awful from it. He is in s lot of pain, mainly his back and stomach. His tummy is very swollen. His memory is getting worse.

He needs pain relief but whenever we call the gp they don't seem interested. If we speak to the team at the hospital they say to call 999. He doesn't want to sit in a&e.

I just don't know what to do to help. Where is the help?

  • Welcome to the forum Sammie although I'm sorry your dad's having a tough time with his immunotherapy.

I do hope you've managed to get this sorted out since making this post but if you're still having difficulties, is there another GP at your dad's surgery that you could speak to about this?

I know your dad isn't keen on going to A&E but if that's what his medical team have been recommending then it would be best to follow their advice. I know it will be difficult to convince your dad to do this but they are in the best position to help him with his pain at this moment in time.

Like I say, I do hope you've managed to get your dad's pain under control but if you'd like to speak with one of our cancer nurses, they'll be available from 9a.m on Monday on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes to you both,
