Laryngectomy Valve keeps leaking

My Grandad has gone though Laryngectomy.

He has recently been put in a speech valve. The valve keeps leaking after every 2 weeks.

My question is does anyone know why it leaks after 2 weeks and why it needs replacing after 2 weeks?

Secondly, why does his voice not come out properly? Why is it only a whispering sound? But as soon as the new valve has been put it, the voice becomes stronger?

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Sarahsuh although I'm sorry for the reason you're joining us.

Unfortunately I can't answer these questions but our lovely and informative team of cancer nurses may be able to help so if you'd like to get their thoughts on this do be sure to give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

If you have your grandad's permission you should be able to discuss this with his medical team as well.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi- I have only just come onto this site so my information may be a little too late. I have had a voice prothesis (valve) for 15 months, I have mine changed roughly every 3 months as I work still and in a job that involves considerable talking. I have had the problem you speak of and it is just sometimes a rogue valve.

As for his speech level that I don't suffer with in fact it is the oposite with me and I am training to stop using too much forceful breath as my problem is I keep blowing my baseplates which is so annoying and makes my neck sore with all the changes.

Alays speak with the Speech Therapists as ther are 2 types (makes) of valve.

    All the best
