SCLC/Liver Deterioration

Hi,

My Dad has been diagnosed with SCLC (Small Cell Lung Cancer) but with spread on his Liver. His treatment plan is Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy.

He had to go into hospital last Friday as his Sodium levels were all over the place. He’s been in since Friday, has had copious amounts of blood tests since Friday, but his sodium levels have not changed. He had his first session of chemotherapy and immunotherapy on Tuesday. Yesterday, he seemed well, he’s alert and looked so much better today than he did at the weekend before treatment even started.

Yesterday afternoon we had a phone call to go to the hospital. His Liver has deteriorated and now they need to concentrate on the Liver before the chemotherapy and Immunotherapy can continue, to say we are gutted is an understatement. The Oncology team have promised they will do everything they possibly can, quickly, to try and sort the Liver, but until then no further treatment.

Yesterday, seemed positive, last night and this morning I feel nauseous, numb and absolutely petrified of what could come. We are waiting for a phone call regarding the plan this morning. They haven't confirmed what condition the Liver is in,  just said it's deteriorated and may be quite serious.

  • Hello Lucie83,

I am sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis and that his cancer has spread to his liver. It's good there is a treatment plan in place though and that he will be able to benefit from chemotherapy and immunotherapy. I am sorry to hear that his liver has deteriorated and that they have had to pause the chemotherapy and immunotherapy as a result as they need to concentrate on the liver.

It seems to be a real rollercoaster of emotions for you as everything keeps changing so fast. Have you now had this important phone call about the treatment plan? I hope that you feel a little bit better after the call and that there is a plan in place now to move forward and tackle the liver issue.

I will now let our other members come and share their own experiences with you of looking after a loved one with SCLC and liver deterioration. If you had any question about what you have been told on the phone about the treatment plan or anything that springs to your mind, our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a ring.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi

    Thank you for your response.

It's now day 4 after chemo and immunotherapy, he was a bit unsteady on his feet yesterday and tired, the unsteadiness wore off yesterday afternoon, today he is very tired and exhausted with bouts of diarreah but his liver function tests have been normal for 2 days now and today is the first day he could have a sodium chloride IV. So, we are hoping in the next few days the Oncologist will be happy that his liver may seem to be stabilising and he will be allowed to continue with treatment in a couple of weeks. He's exhausted but he's aware, he knows what's going on around him.

Keeping everything crossed this is a step in the right direction.

    Thanks

    Lucie.

  • Funny we are both Lucie spelled 'ie' :)

That sounds really promising that his liver function tests have been normal in the last couple of days and I am keeping everything crossed that he will be allowed to continue treatment in the next couple of weeks.

Sending you some positive Lucie vibes and I hope that this is indeed a step in the right direction.

    Lucie

  • I know, there's not many spelt with an "ie"

Thank you and thank you for replying.
