My mum going through chemo/Mucositis

Hi there been struggling with worry and anxiety and thought I would try finding some support here ️
My mum has oesophageal cancer, and is currently having chemo therapy. Into her 5th cycle now she has been getting a very sore throat, and mouth. Her voice is very hoarse and she finds drinking a bit difficult as liquid catches her throat and makes her cough.(she also has copd) . She doesn’t seem to get a lot of support from her nurses or gp.
does anyone have experience of Mucositis? What can help ? Is her hoarse voice likely because of it and her coughing ? She didn’t have these symptoms before starting chemo. Also she has been extra tired this past week does fatigue get worse the longer you are on chemotherapy?
I’m finding it hard to sleep and constantly worry about her. It's hard to know who to talk to in situations like this. Thank you for any replies. Annie x

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Annie89j although I'm sorry about the difficulties your mum is having at the moment.

Hopefully some of our members who have contended with these issues will share their advice and experiences with you soon but in the meantime, I hope the information we have about muscositis and how to treat mouth problems will help.

Tiredness and fatigue are common side effects of chemo that can increase as treatment progresses but if you're worried or would like to talk things through with someone then do give our cancer nurses a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

I hope this helps and the side effects of your mum's treatment starts to improve soon.

    Best wishes to you both,
