I'm really freaked out

Hey all,

I know this has probably been spoken about plenty of times but I've got myself into a real frenzy of worry.

So a very good friend of mine, who I've known for over 15 years, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October 2019. He had surgery and all was well, until now it's not. He hasn't got long left and as his next of kin, I've got a lot of responsibilities that will come as executor of his will.

On top of that, my partner's best friend was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January of 2020. She had the full Whipple surgery and all was well, until a couple of weeks ago when they found a spot on her liver which they thought was just scar tissue initially. She's had a laser-type treatment to blast the f***er to kingdom come and now we have to wait a month to see if it worked.

On top of THAT another friend we knew very well died of brain cancer developments that stemmed from lung cancer.

Safe to say that I'm pretty freaked out and there's been souch stress and worry of late that I'm now CONVINCED that I have a hidden cancer that I won't find out about until its too late.

I've had stomach-related issues for the past couple of weeks which has caused changes in a few *ahem* habits, which I'm convinced are symptoms of cancer.

I've got a check-up on Thursday to make sure it's not (and hopefully quell my worries), but I just wanted a community to talk to and vent to. I can't tell my partner as he's worried enough about his best friend, and me fretting over a hypothetical diagnosis isn't going to help anyone.

Anyway, thanks very much for reading and sending love to everyone! ️

  • Hi Jake,

I know where you're coming from - my wife was recently diagnosed with Cancer of unknown primary with a lot of secondaries on her Liver and 2 months later she died but, and i remember this clearly, that horrible day that she was diagnosed we took the kids for a walk in the park, some quality family time and i started feeling pain in my sides. Since then its moved under my ribs, alternating sides, on my sides etc - it moves around. I consulted with a doctor who diagnosed me with gastritis but....... thats what they said about my wifes condition for a couple of months earlier in the year and look how that turned out.

I'm really lucky that i get health assessments with work and so I booked it in, explained my fears and the doctor gave me a thorough examination and took bloods (Liver function, pancreatic function, bloods all clear) screened my bowel, all clear - offered me a referral for a scan, but didn't take it up.

The doctor explained that its likely adrenelin etc. which switches off blood to the digestive tract and doing it over a long period of time (like the horribly stressful time that you explain) - but the thing is that response is designed for you to escape from a rampant wooly mammoth, not ongoing stress of loved ones dealing with this horrible disease.

Really hope you get all clear and my story and similar experiences goes someway to giving you some peace of mind before you get your examination.
