Too weak for chemo, now what?

Hi everyone,

This is my first time using a forum of any sort, but when it comes to cancer and it's treatment I think exploring every avenue is essential.

My mother has been battling cancer for near on a year now. Having been through an operation and chemo once she was given the all clear earlier this year when a scan showed nothing present. Unfortunately a month or so later after prolong stomach pains she returned for a scan and the cancer had returned; this time not operable due to its position around the artery to her leg and not suitable for radiotherapy for the same reason.

Hence chemo was the only available option. After weeks of trying to get her strength up it is in fact the opposite that is occurring, as she has started becoming weaker. The nurse believe there is nothing more that can be done, and this weakening is the signs of her coming death over the next few weeks. But with the aim of exhausting all options, I would like to ask if there are any other treatment available that could save her? Or any way of countering this decline in strength so she can be treated more conventionally??

The cancer is not spreading which is a plus and is confined to a reasonably tight area of her bowel. Any thoughts, however crazy would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Chris

  • Hello Chris

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and that at the moment treatment options aren't available to her. It's understandable that you want to explore all possible options.

I'm afraid that I'm not able to answer your question but I'd encourage you to have a chat with one of our team of nurses. I'm sure they will be happy to talk things through with you and offer any advice and information that they may be able to. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
