My Dads diagnosis... can't get my head round it

Hi everyone. So last time I posted, Dad had been diagnosed with stage 4, and has been in and out of hospital 4 times in 6 weeks. This time, he's had a fast track discharge, got a hospital bed, commode, carers 4 times a day, district nurses,  and has a prognosis of less than 3 months. I found out it has spread to his ribs and adrenial gland, and 1 lung is completely damaged by it. He has zero energy, he has deteriorated so quickly, I'm so scared their prognosis of less than 3 months is actually sooner.   How will I know? Will he be likely to sleep more?  I'm on auto pilot day by day but anxiety is through the roof with my phone attached to my hip expecting a phone call. Any advice or experience is welcome, and so much appreciated xx

    Hi Katy,

I am so sorry to hear about your dad. It is hard to say what signs to expect. In most cases, sleeping most of the time, not eating or drinking are some of the signs to look out for. I have been through this a few times with family and know just how heart breaking it is.

Thinking of you both and wishing you the strength to see this through. Please keep in touch and remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thankyou so much for your kind words.  He's always tired and sleeping more, and a bit disorientated with time and days. Sorry you've had the experience too.  Xx

    Hi Katy,

I should have mentioned disorientation, as this can happen too. Remember that hearing is the last sense to go, so keep speaking to your dad no matter how unresponsive he appears. The touch of your hand and some gentle reassurance will mean the world to him.

His nurses should be able to give you some indication of time frames if you want to know, but you may need to ask them outright for this. I know that it is hard, but try not to dwell upon the inevitable. Instead, try to make the most of the time that he has left and to keep him as comfortable as you can.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
