Dad has advanced metastatic prostate cancer

My dad had a PSA test because his friend had prostate cancer and he recommended it.  He'd had a slightly bad back but nothing awful.  His PSA was 49, later >70 I believe on a second test, Gleeson score 9 and he has advanced cancer.  MRI seems to show it's spread to the testicles, bladder, rib and into his neck vertibrae.  He's having a CT and is already on hormone treatment.  He's 79.

I know that many people with prostate cancer can live with it for a long time, even when it's advanced.  I'm reading differing prognoses online though for what can happen next.  I'm especially worried about the cancer in his neck and if that could cause injury to his spine.  He's a proud man and I think he'd hate that.

It's all happening so fast.  It's only weeks since his original PSA.

  • Hi Maria

Im so sorry to read about your dad. My husband has recently been diagnosed with advance prostate cancer too. He had a Gleason score of 5 + 4 and it's spread to his bones, his spine and pelvis. It was only discovered from an MRI scan as he was struggling with back pain. He's had surgery on his spine to stabilize and is on hormone therapy as well as radiotherapy at the moment. Hes really tired but doing well and looking forward to a short break from treatment before chemo starts. He's 38 so it's been quite a shock.
I know what you mean about it all happening so fast, it's such a whirlwind so be sure to try and catch your breath in between. I wanted to reply as we just watched a documentary on Channel 4 catch up if you have access to it. It's about the BBC news reader Bill Turnbull and his journey with advanced PC. We found it quite interesting to watch.
Sending you and your family lots of love and strength,
