Dad has terminal cancer

My dad was diagnosed with bile duct, liver and lung cancer(terminal) 5 weeks ago.
We are caring for him at home just now, with the help of carers 3 times a day.

He has no energy, no appetite and struggling to walk. Still keeping up his chain smoking though.

We haven't been given a prognosis,

Just looking for some words of wisdom or advice please.

We lost our mum to lung cancer just over 2 years ago too.

  • Hi there,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm very sorry to hear of what you are currently going through with your dad. I hope you're getting on OK although I'm sure this must be incredibly difficult.

Hopefully you will get the information you need before too long from his doctor/specialist.

You should receive further replies from others on the forum who may have been through - or are going through - something similar, otherwise do have a browse or search for other discussions on here.

It is a bit of a cliche but try to take things a day at a time, or an hour if it helps. Do what you need to do in terms of support for your dad alongside the carers, and try to make the most of the time with him. Alongside that, do make sure you are also taking care of yourself - for example speaking to others around you, taking time to do things you enjoy and that can provide some distraction, and if helpful reaching out to organisations who can offer support, such as Macmillan.

And we're always here for support if you need it.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
