Dealing with Cancer, Dad has terminal lung cancer

Hi,

I'm just writing on here because my dad was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. He had lymphoma last year and went through a year of chemo and they thought it was cleared and we finally thought he was over it. Since Christmas he has been unwell and in and out of hospital getting biopsy's and today it was confirmed that he had terminal lung cancer. The doctor thinks he has months to live. He was given the option of more chemotherapy but because he suffers from Diabetes , he decided not to go through with it.

He's at home with us but I'm trying to help him even though it's impossible to know what to say to him. He would be old fashioned and doesnt like to talk about the cancer and he is sick of hearing about it at this stage.

Covid has seriously messed this up and I'm thinking how things could be different if he was seen sooner because we keep waiting and waiting for information and then we get this today.

I'm venting on here because I see other people went through this.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Eire although I'm very sorry that your dad's cancer has returned and for the prognosis he's been given. This must be very difficult for you all.

Sadly the pandemic has had a very big impact on many families and their cancer journeys so our members will understand how you're feeling at the moment and will hopefully be along soon to offer their support and advice.

Talking about dying can be very difficult and people often avoid the subject but I hope this information we have on our website will help. Our team of cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to have a chat with them as well.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
