DIEP Flap - Advice for family ❤︎

Hi all, I would really love to get some advice please. My mother in law has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has her DIEP flap surgery coming up soon. This is so new to us all, me and my husband really want to help in whatever we that we can but we aren't sure exactly how.

Please if anyone has had the surgery or been through similar. What was the best thing that friends/family did for you/bought you/ helped you with etc? I'd also love to put a gift basket together with things for her surgery, warm blanket, fluffy socks, all that sort of thing but I feel quite clueless as to what she will need?
Thank you so much in advance and wish everyone well xxx

  • Hello Lolabeex

I'm sorry to hear about your mother-in-law's diagnosis. It's obviously a worrying time for you all and I'm sure that she will appreciate any help and support that you're able to give her.

Hopefully, some of the members here on the forum who have had reconstruction will post to share their experiences with you but I also wanted to let you know that we do have some information on our website about DIEP reconstruction which you may find helpful to have a read through.

In terms of putting a gift basket together, I'm sure that your Mother-in-law would appreciate any little indulgences that you include. On a practical level, some women find heart-shaped cushions can make sleeping and sitting more comfortable post-surgery. They're available on our website here or from organisations such as Jen's Friends. I'm unsure if your mother-in-law lives alone but maybe something like a travel mug or thermos would be useful for leaving hot drinks. She may struggle with tasks such as lifting a heavy kettle so possibly a small travel kettle to help make daily tasks easier It's also worth checking if she will be coming home with wound drains in place. The hospital may give her a bag to carry these in but if not having a bag to pop them in can make things much easier as well. You can find lots of these available to buy online.

I hope this helps give you some ideas to get started. If you've any questions at any point that you'd like to talk to our team of nurses about you're most welcome to give them a call. they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
