Stage 4 lung cancer that’s spread

Hi everyone. My mum was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. We are going to her first appointment with an oncologist tomorrow. So far the drs and nurses we have met and have looked after her have been amazing. She has had biopsies, ct scan, pet scan, x rays and tomorrow we’ll get full results. So far we know it has spread to her trachea and 2 places in her back. I’ve been holding myself together for mum and sobbing away from her. My mum was always the strong one for us all and she’s finding it hard adjusting to us being strong for her xx it's so reassuring that there are people to speak to that are in a similar position xx

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat community Nuttyjock although I'm sorry about your mum's diagnosis and where the cancer has spread.

I hope the oncologist was able to give you some good news yesterday but if you have anything playing on your mind since speaking with them or would just like to talk things through with someone then do give our cancer nurses a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Many of our members here are on similar journeys so I'm sure some of them will be along soon to offer their support and advice. In the meantime, I hope this section we have for family, friends and caregivers will help.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Nuttyjock8, my husband aged 75 has stage 4 lung cancer diagnosed four years ago, last year it had spread to liver and stomach.  Since he had already had chemotherapy and radiotherapy he is now on immunotherapy for two years which is holding it at bay.  So it's very hard at furst to accept all that is happening and I understand what you are going through.  You meed to trust her oncologist and trust they will do all they can for her as ours has.  I've been writing daily about this on here for four years so have been through it all with him. I'll follow your thread and see how you get on or message me privately on Dor06..  Take care, Carol x

  • Hello

    thank you for your reply.

so the oncologist told us the cancer is in her lung, windpipe, lymph nodes and spine in 2 places. Without treatment they said she has a couple of months. Immunotherapy has been offered to mum if she wants to give it a try, she was told this would maybe give her a bit of extra time.
we are now reading into this treatment and the leaflets the consultant gave us. I had read up on Chemo but hadn't really looked into immunotherapy so any trusted information on this would be a great help.

  • Hi Natalie, chemotherapy is extremely hard to take and it's a case of quality or quantity of life and if its not a good diagnosis then it's very difficult  to decide.  My husband was stage 4 when diagnosed but he was fit enough to stand the chemotherapy and radiotherapy but it only shrunk to stage 3 and was extremely hard to deal with.  The immunotherapy is his last chance but it doesn't make him ill and weak, he still has an appetite and is not in pain, his is now in liver and stomach but his treatment is worth having every 3 weeks.  We have taken our oncologists advice at every step so listen to their advice and then make your decision.  Hopefully this helps you a little bit.
