Jaundice getting worse

Hi there

Caring for my mum at home who is 88 and has advanced pancreatic cancer. Had a stent fitted a month ago to relieve biliary obstruction and jaundice. Has been largely asymptomatic since then and jaundice had cleared but today looks more jaundiced again. Is quite listless. Breathless on any exertion.

District nurse coming on Tuesday.

Wondering if I should wait until then or if I need to phone out of hours GP or palliative nurse? She won't want to go back to hospital.

She's not saying she's in any more pain than usual. Taking paracetamol.

Thanks

  • Hi Ben

Thank you. My fears about the jaundice as a sign that the liver function had further declined all came to a head on Saturday night when elevated bilirubin led to a 3 hour period of vomiting and diarrhea with the on call nurse needing to be called out to administer an anti sickness jab.

Since then it's been a rapid decline and whilst 2 days ago she could walk to the bathroom, yesterday she could stand and with some help wriggle on to the commode, but today she is bedridden and catheterised.

Mum is now formally on the end of life care pathway. She is declining rapidly and is clearly exhausted.

I'm sharing the journey as an example of how things can change quite dramatically in a very short space of time with advanced pancreatic cancer.

I'll just add that the support I've so desperately needed over the past 6 weeks since mum was discharged has now all ramped up and the community palliative care team have been fantastic. As the sole caregiver 24/7 I was losing all hope that anyone was actually going to come to our help. The system seemed so bewildering and bureaucratic.

Hope this is helpful to others on the forum.

She is being kept comfortable and pain free which is a blessing.

    Hi HotPot,

I am so sorry to hear what you are gong through. I lost my own mum to secondary breast cancer which had spread to her liver, lungs, bone and brain. We have been through all that you ae going through and it is heartbreaking.

I am so glad to hear that the palliative care team has stepped in and that you are at last getting the help you need. It is so difficult trying to cope with all of this on your own and, you're right, the system is far too bureaucratic.

It is good to hear that your mum is being kept comfortable and I sincerely hope that she has a peaceful passing.

Please keep in touch and remember that we are always here for you.

I wish you the strength to get through this.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
