Advice on treatment

My mum is late 70's with bowel and liver cancer. She has been told she has 6/12 weeks left. She really wants chemo to extend this time. But the oncologist wants her to stop.  Mum recently had bowel op. Which has left her extremely weak.
We are meeting the oncologist next week, mum is wanting me to fight for treatment for her, which I will. Mum feels the decisions being made are personal!

My questions are from other peoples experience, how likely will treatment be offered? If offered is it likely to be effective? Where do they arrive at these timescales? How can I support my mum? I'm truly at a loss.
many thanks

  • Hello Tracyh19

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and that there are some issues around possible treatment at the moment.

It's really difficult to say why the Oncologist has recommended stopping chemo but it may be that they feel your Mum isn't well enough to tolerate things.

I'd suggest that you give our team of nruses a call ahead of the appointment with the Oncologist next week. I'm sure that talking things through with them will help you to get things clear in your mind before you speak to the Consultant and help you to support Mum in whatever way she moves forward. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
