Bowel cancer returned now with BRAF mutation

Hello,

I wanted to hear from anyone who has Bowel Cancer with the BRAF mutation.

My mum had stage 3 bowel cancer and was in remission for almost 2 years. Her latest scan showed a large tumour that was by the bowel in the space of the 12 weeks of waiting for surgery it grew from 9cm to 12cm and then finally to 16cm before it was removed.

As you can imagine we were all devasted. Pathology has now been completed and we have been informed that my mother now has the BRAF mutation. Her oncologist has said its difficult to know the prognosis with this as with this mutation cancer spreads very quickly, so it is now pallative care, and the prognosis isn't good.

She starts chemo this Friday and is really scared, she managed her last 6 months of chemo resonably well, but this time it sounds like it could likely be really rough and I know she is thinking a long the lines of....maybe I would rather have what time I have left feeling as well as I can in myself withouth the affects of chemo. Which is obviously incredibly hard to hear but I am mindful that I want to be supportive as possible with her decisions.

I wondered if anyone has on here has got Bowel cancer with the BRAF gene mutation, how are you doing? and also anyone who is having Luorouracil and Irinotecan (FOLFIRI) chemotherapy? How are you finding it?

Any words of wisdom/ support/ your stories would be really helpful at this time.

Sending everyone much love and postive energy.

  • Hello Julia

I'm sorry to hear that your Mum's cancer has recently returned. It's obviously a difficult time for you all especially with the additional news that she's been given this time about the genetic mutation.

I hope that her treatment goes well today and that she doesn't find things too difficult. Do make sure you call the chemo team if you have any concerns.

We've some information on our website about FOLFIRI and if you use the forum search function (magnifying glass in the blue bar) to search for FOLFIRI you'll see that there are some posts from other members who have had this treatment.

I can't see that we have any members who have had the BRAF mutation with a diagnosis of bowel cancer. My understanding is that this mutation is only found in about 10% of a bowel cancer diagnosis so it may be that you're able to connect with others through a more cancer-specific forum such as the one on Bowel Cancer UK.  I'd also suggest giving our team of nruses a call. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any information and advice that they can. They're available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,
