Helping someone who's treatment has been stopped

Hi

My mum has Stage 4 Lung Cancer and has been having immunotherapy since Feb 2020. But because of various side effects her oncologist has decided she can no longer have this form of treatment but he has said chemo is potentially an option. She has out right refused to have chemo for many reasons including she is worried about being ill most of the time and also losing her hair (I am aware this doesnt happen to everyone).

Does anyone have any advice on how I should talk to her about this? At the min any discussion ends in an argument because she wont listen to anyone's opinions and it is really frustrating because we want her to give something else a go, even if she stops if the side effects are bad, at least she can say she gave it a go! I do understand of course its her decision but it is very difficult to come to terms with.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

  • Hello Roseg84,

I am so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis and about the fact that she is no longer able to have immunotherapy. It is understandable that your mum is nervous about having chemotherapy and I thought I would share our general information on chemotherapy with you which I hope will be helpful to you and help you talk to her about it. I think it would be perhaps a good idea for your mum to talk to her oncologist about it, to have an opportunity to have a conversation with him about this option so that she has all the information. It will be a chance for her concerns to be addressed and he will be able to tell her a bit more about what to expect in terms of being ill or hair loss .

It must be really hard for you if she refuses to listen to what you have to say. Perhaps you could also get in touch with our nurses for advice on this? You can ring their free helpline 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you manage to talk to her about this and that she gets to think about her options carefully and gets a chance to speak to her oncologist about anything that is playing on her mind.

    Best wishes,
