Mesothelioma

My father who is 89 was diagnosed with stage 4 mesothelioma in January and I was advised that he wouldn't live beyond February.  I am really pleased to say he is still very much with us.  Fortunately I have a very understanding husband and moved in with my dad to help him.  Although he looks like he has lost weight he still weighs the same which confuses me.  His walking has really deteriorated and I would be grateful to understand why this is.  Although he says he isn't hungry I do him 3goid meals a day plus snacks which he woofs through.  He has had problems with his bowls from constipation again I would like to understand why this is.  He just takes a couple of codene of a night and occasionally paracetamol during the day or a 1/4 teaspoon of morphine but he isn't on any other pain killer.   I noticed he has a little more of a cough where he brings like a thick saliva up is this usual?  The main thing is I can see and feel like a sausage shape lump under both ribs is this normal and would this be the thickening?  Besides this I am over the moon to say he is well besides having a little snooze occasionally so I am mystified to why I was given only over just a month said they couldn't offer him any treatment when he is so well.  Any advice would be appreciated

  • Hi Bev,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. Firstly I'm sorry to hear of what your father is going through. I hope you're getting on OK - it sounds like you're being incredibly supportive.

Unfortunately I'm not able to offer much help with regards to your questions. These should really be best discussed with your father's specialist, as they'll be able to advise from a medical point of view and specific to him, and it's important that you get the answers you need.

If you feel you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses, who may be able to offer some advice and support, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

    Wishing you all the best,
