I'm sure some of our members who have contended with similar issues will share their recommendations with you soon but whilst you wait we have a scar gel on our website that may help. It's called Silderm and can be used to reduce and improve the appearance of both old and new scars. It's also suitable for sensitive skin so would be gentle on your dad's skin. 

There are other soothing skin products on there that may come in handy as well.

Hi Daffy

I used bio-oil skincare oil on breast cancer scars after a lumpectomy and also lymph node biopsy (armpit). It's a bit pricey but really helped and after 18 months the scars are hardly noticeable. 
Hope you find something for your Dad and it's great he's got you to support him.
