Sister not drinking anymore

Hi everyone.

My sister has a brain tumour and is asleep most of the time now and we're really struggling to get fluids into her as she won't open her mouth when she is awake and really struggles to swallow if she does.

Has anyone got any ideas how we can help her as we're really desperate now.

  • Hi there ...

You need to get in touch with her oncology team... or G P s surgery ... you could also call Marie Currie for advice to .. she should be having palitive care and district  nurse comming round ... theres no way you should be doinng this without  help ...

One thing we did for my sister when she could no longer drink was we got  mouth swabs from the chemist so we could at least her mouth moist ... but  please call those numbers and ask for help ... let us know how you go .... Chrissie x

  • Thanks for the suggestions Chrissie.

We have a nurse coming out but it seems like they've given up on her now. I thought maybe an IV drip or something but they won't give her one.

I'll try the swabs though and give Marie Curie a ring thanks.

I really appreciate the advice and so sorry about your sister.

  • I am so sorry to hear this.. it's just so worrying and frightening for you.. with my mum we used a plastic syringe filled with water and gave it to her little by little.. we also moistured her mouth with a tiny amount of ice on her lips and glycerin mouth lolly pops.. you can pick them up from local chemists.

hope this helps.. thinking of you x

  • Thank you bizzyluzzy.

I really appreciate it. We've been trying a syringe but she's barely swallowing now. I'm researching IV drips today in the hope we find something. I'll definitely try the chemist's today for lollies.

    Thanks again
