Debulking surgery for throat cancer. Anyone had this done?

Hi all,

My brother has been battling throat cancer (supraglottis) for nearly 3 years now. His tumour was diagnosed inoperable over 12 months ago, amd he is now terminal stage 4.
He is struggling to speak as it is growing, amd also beginning to compromise his airway. So now, they are going to debulk his tumour next week. From what I am reading this is to prevent him needing an emergency tracheotomy at some stage, and is relatively successful.

However, he tells me he will only be in hospital as a day patient? I found this odd anyway, and even more so when I have read a study on it which says the average hospital stay following this is 17 days.

Has anyone had this done? How long did you stay in hospital?

  • Hello Hermana

I'm sorry to hear about your brother's diagnosis. It sounds like it's been a difficult time for you all and it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about his upcoming surgery.

We do have a lot of members here who have had throat cancer but I'm unsure if we've any here who have been through a debulking surgery. It may be that our nurses are able to give you some further information about the procedure. If you'd like to speak to them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that all goes smoothly for your brother next week.

    Best wishes,
