Pet scan results

Hi everyone.

Newbie here.. my mum was diagnosed with stage 3 oesophageal cancer 3 weeks ago and after having a PET scan last week has been told she now needs an MRI as the scan has highlighted areas in her liver and neck. Does this mean the cancer has spread or could it possibly be something else? Xx

  • Hi, I am sorry about your mums diagnosis, thats very scary for you, understandably.
I don't know what the exact reason for the scan is as I am not medically trained, but, am sure it will be to check for spread, see the whole picture before deciding on a treatment plan for your mum. Its good they are checking, and not delaying anything. There are many people here who are, or have relatives suffering with this illness please don't hesitate to come back if you need any support x

  • Thanks Daisy71,

the scan was to check to see if it had spread, it has shown highlighted areas in the liver and neck. Due to Covid we haven't seen the oncologist yet, only had telephone conversations with the nurse and one face to face appointment with the nurse. She told us mum def wouldn't be operated on as she wouldn't pass the fitness test.  On the phone yesterday she wouldn't say the bright areas on the pet scan were def cancer but wondered with everyone's experience on here the likelihood they are? Mum was already stage 3 before the scan. xx
