Infections and germs not just Corona and CHEMO

Hi all.

Mum lives a long way away she has bowel cancer and is starting chemo in a couple of weeks after an opp for removal of some large intestine and rectum, she now has a stoma.  She has had her first Corona vaccine last week.

It would be nice to see her but am worried about passing on infections - I've been reading on the forums about people going out shopping and for lunch etc when they are feeling well between treatments and am wondering if she's had the vaccine how bad is it if I see her ?? I mean if people (before corona) were going out to lunch etc surely that's more dangerous virus wise than seeing someone in your own home or outside - basically can we see her over the next year whilst she's having chemo?  She lives about 12 hours drive away so it's not like we can go and talk to her through a window every day. :(

  • Hi Ukmonocrome,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. Firstly I'm sorry to hear about what your mum is going through. I can see this is a really difficult situation and also hard to know what to do with regards to visiting. There are likely a few things to consider, including what your mum thinks, what her treatment team think, and also yourself. It may help to talk things through with one of our nurses - they could be helpful in terms of providing some thoughts and advice. If you'd like to talk to them then you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
