Dad with Advanced Oesophageal Cancer - pain control

Hi My father has just been diagnosed with Advanced oesophageal cancer. This was found because of painful eating. At 86 there's not a lot of options but I'm looking for any advice of pain control whilst eating. Secondly, with your experience can you outline the deteriation process I should expect? How long could I expect my father to live in his own house with minimal support? Any thing else I should be asking or advice please. It's a difficult time but I guess if you're reading this we are all on a similar journey. Thanks.

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat community Mawster although I'm sorry about your father's diagnosis. This must be very tough for you both.

Your father's medical team will be in the best position to help with pain relief and answer your questions about what will happen next but our cancer nurses are on hand if you'd like to discuss this with them as well. They're available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully some of our members who are in a similar situation will offer their support and advice to you soon but you can also find out more about living with advanced oesophageal cancer on our website just here.

    Best wishes to you both,

  • Hi,

sorry to hear this ! When you say advanced - have they told you where it's spread to?

if you aren't sure about anything then you should call his cancer nurse/doctor and they will provide you with any information.
