Unmanaged pain

Hi

My dad passed away last weekend, he had been diagnosed with lung cancer at the end of October which had already spread to his liver and spine, he was given radiotherapy to help with the spinal pain but it didn't work in fact when they rescanned it was much worse than before, so it was decided there was nothing more they could do we got that news at the start of December.  From then until last weekend I feel like his pain was never managed, the Farleigh team were amazing in helping dad get the meds he needed but the GP very often questioned the doses and strengths thus holding up the medications then when we got the prescriptions the chemist told us it was controlled and would have to be ordered, we just couldn't keep on top of the meds he was having so much and we were having to reorder as soon as we collected the last lot of meds, I feel like my dad was let down by the gp and chemists not working together, we battled to get his meds right up until the day he passed away.  I am so angry about it I am struggling to grieve, I will write to complain when I have calmed down but right now I can't, I have been told by somebody recently that this isn't uncommon, is there anybody on here who has also struggled with this? I don't think he was ever truly pain free from the moment he found out to the day of his passing. He passed at home and it was so hard watching him go downhill from Christmas to the new year, I just want to know do people with cancer ever get free of the pain, it's so cruel.

  • So sorry for your loss. My dad was diagnosed on 03 November and died on 12 December and like you we struggled and had to fight to get him all the help he needed and I also believe he was let down by GP and Acute Trust.
My dad wasn't pain free until He entered a hospice the day before he died. I don't think COVID helps as I feel primary care have stopped looking after their patients at home and unfortunately end of life care tends to be more in the home.

  • I'm so sorry to hear how quickly your dad passed, that's no time at all, and sorry that you also fought so hard for him to help ease his pain x I'm beginning to think that this is more common than we imagined maybe covid has played a big part in it as so many people are staying in their own homes.  Take care of yourself xx

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply,  at some point I'm sure the anger will subside, since we lost mum 8 years ago I have tried to be a calmer person but unfortunately angry me is back for a bit.  Thank you for replying ️
