Inconclusive CT brain scan

My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 NSCLC 6 months ago.

He underwent a laminectomy on T9 vertebrae last July. He also had metastases to his thumb and adrenal glands.

He began chemotherapy/immunotherapy last September.

He had a PET-CT scan in the middle of November which showed  a small cancerous nodule in his lung had disappeared and another one is now only 7mm and inactive.

His adrenal glands did show slightly elevated activity but no change in size.

He had a CT scan last week. I rang for the results early today. I live in Bulgaria, even though the doctor speaks English she is very hard to understand over the phone.

His lung and abdomen scans are not ready. To me that's sounds ominous as results normally only take a couple of days here.

His brain scan had areas of change but is inconclusive. Can anybody tell me what this means please?

Then the doctor was saying something about no metastases. I have no idea if she was talking about his brain or another part of his body. I have to ring back Monday after the tumour team have discussed the findings.

This wait is the most awful thing even.x

  • Hello Janeabeth

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so anxious ahead of speaking with your husband's Consultant tomorrow. We know that many people find these times of waiting particularly difficult.

It sounds positive that the Dr mentioned when you last spoke that there were no metastases. Hopefully, once the team has discussed all the findings tomorrow they will be in a position to give you a clearer picture of how your husband is responding to the treatment he's been having.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for your reply Jenn.

We got all the results today.

No new metastases, changes in the brain are not metastases. Minimal changes elsewhere.

Doctor said the disease is stable.

Can't quite believe it. It's Stage 4 NSCLC.

To continue 2 more courses of chemo/ immunotherapy, then just immunotherapy.

Doctor even said it is a good result. That's a first from her, she's normally very cagey.

    So relieved!x

  • That's brilliant news!

I hope that the next 2 cycles go smoothly for him.

    Best wishes,
