Palliative Cancer diagnosis in Covid times

Hi everyone

I am new to this forum. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I'm actually a health professional (outpatients for the NHS) and I just feel very despondent about my Grandad. He's 92 with a palliative kidney cancer diagnosis we got on the 23rd December. We are having difficulty in getting answers regarding his prognosis and how to access palliative support as currently he is classed as medically stable but he's very weak and has had a failed discharge already today. Even though I have some experience in this I am finding it very difficult to find answers especially as all conversations about his care plan (currently due to COVID pressures understandably scant) or what we can have at home as apparently despite his diagnosis the hospital won't do an environmental visit until he's home he's so weak though I don't think we could manage without the equipment.

Any advice is appreciated

  • Hello.
So sorry to hear what you are going through.  Whilst not quite the same it sort of recently happened to my dad who had a failed discharge and I had to fight to get him a bed on a hospice where he sadly died.

Before he passed away we made a referral to our local Neighbourhood Team consisting of district nurses, occupational therapists, physios etc and they came out and did an assessment of dad and were brilliant in getting the equipment he needed to stay at home whilst he was able to.

If you don't have a Neighbourhood Team locally then his GP can refer to your district nurse team for his GP and they will support and pull in all the support he needs from different services.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thank you so much for replying. I am so sorry for your loss.

Thank you for the information. I will certainly look into a local team or the GP.
