Struugling with husbands tonsil cancer partial lymph node

So here we are husband has to date had 13 radiotherapy sessions and one chemotherapy session. I had done lots of research as I thought before he started to help me try to prepare and support what he had coming. Sadly we knew he was going to be going to hell and back as the treatment is brutal but absolutely nothing prepared either of us for this. We thought weeks 4 onwards would be his worst but I cannot honestly imagine worse. He hasn't eaten anything for 3 days,  he cannot even drink the shakes from the hospital. Absolutely everything burns his mouth and he cannot swallow it. Tried absolutely every single recommendation i have seen on posts from buying medication,  to different types of food and drink. He can just about drink water and get pain killers in him. Even liquid painkillers burn him ! We took him to minor injuries yesterday to look at his mouth and they have given drops for thrush which has helped tongue but not his throat. He said he wants to die and he is meant to be starting radiotherapy again tomorrow and another chemotherapy in a few days which knocked him sideways last time. I honestly don't know how he will cope , if he will and how I can try to support him going forwards. Covid has made this so much harder and during Christmas as there is no one to talk to  as staff are understandably on a deserved Christmas holiday but I feel so overwhelmed

  • Hello JPop,

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's difficulty eating and can see who this is affecting his mood. This can occur while having treatment often. I can see that you have tried different things but there is more information here, as well as ways of coping, which I hope is useful for you. It's important to tell his medical team about everything that's been concerning you, if you haven't already. If you ever need to speak to someone, we have a team of nurses available on the freephone 0808 800 4040, lines open Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

    I hope this helps,

  • Thank you i will have a look through the links. He has now been admitted and kept in hospital to treat him for an infection. They have to delay his chemotherapy he isn't well enough to take it. I am hoping with medication he will soon improve to be well enough to fight through the rest of his treatment
