Could my mum have Cachexia?

My mum (69) has breast cancer for the past 5 years and on 2 previous occasions prior to that. It has now  spread to her lungs. It can't be cured but has treatment every 3 weeks and so far has only moved a little. Since last November she has been having high temperature, infections (chest and urinary and has lost around 3 stone, as well as muscle mass loss. She is exhausted just going upstairs.. no one seems to say anything about her weight and muscle loss but it is so dramatic and she looks amaciated despite a good appetite.. it is so hard to see her struggle.. anyone else out there seen this happen with their loved ones?

  • Hello Tantan

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and the fact that she has been struggling with changes recently. It's obviously difficult to see a loved one going through this.

I can see that you've also posted in our Ask the Nurses section and I'm sure that they will be able to offer you more information when they are back in the office. In the meantime, you might find it useful to have a look at this page on our website which also has some links to information about managing diet.

    Best wishes,

  • Yes, my Mum has been the same with less appetite. Try Fortisip or Ensure Plus high calorie shakes, the can be bought from amazon or on prescription from a dietician which your oncologist or doctor can refer you to. Ours did not offer this but my good friend who is an Oncologist in a private practice asked me to push for it and I did, we got a dietician and this was the prescription given. It may help to keep some weight on xx
