Recovery

My mums breast cancer op takes place soon. What will she need during recovery?
Is there anything that can help her be more comfortable that I could get for her or prepare?

  • Hello Hannahrsh

How lovely that you want to get some things ready for your Mum ahead of her upcoming operation. I'm unsure if the hospital will provide them but two things I know that I've seen mentioned as being really helpful post surgery has been a drain bag and a heart shaped pillow.

If your Mum will be coming home with a drain in situ having a bag with a long strap that she can put her drain in will useful as it will make it easier to carry round. Some women find it much more comfortable to sleep or sit with a heart shaped cushion that they can put under their armpit. You'll find lots of examples if you use Google and it may be that you want to get something bright and cheerful or something with a colour or pattern that means something to your Mum.

You might find it helpful to have a look at this downloadable information booklet on the Breast Cacner Now website but if you've any questions or would like to talk to someone then please do give our team of nurses a call. I'm sure they would be able to offer some advice and support. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
