Dont know what to expect

Hi everyone, my Dad has stage three esophegus cancer and told he will soon need to have a stent fitted as he can not swollow food. He has been told following radio and chemo his cancer is now  incurable. The good news is it hasnt spread anywhere else at the moment however he seems to be getting frailer everyday. I have asked the consultant how i would know if the cancer has spread his answer " he will show other symptoms" "you will know" obviously with the current pandemic they wont be scanning him often to see if it has spread. But how will i know ?im not medically trained!

I nursed my mom who had a brain tumour and she sadly passed away just a couple of years ago. With her illness she was visabally ill and everyday that passed there was no denying she was dying she suffered so much :-(  however with Dad apart from the weight loss, sleepiness and difficulty in swollowing his cancer isnt as obvious.

Im worried that i am not looking after Dad enough and wont be able to recognise if he is getting worse or near end of life . I know i sound very morbid but after losing my mom which devastated me and my family, i feel the need to know what to expect and plan for the future care of my Dad- any advice really appreciated. Sadly i asked for support from McMillian with mom that never materlised so i am reluctant to ask for their help again.

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat forum Pendy although I'm sorry to read about your dad.

This must be very difficult for you, especially after what you went through with your mum, and it's completely understandable why you want to know what may happen as time goes on. We have some general information about what may happen to someone in the last few weeks of life but I'm sure some of our members who have been experience of this cancer diagnosis will share their advice and experiences with you soon.

Our team of cancer nurses are also on hand on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to have a chat with them about this as well.

Our community are here for you Pendy and will do what they can to support you on this journey.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
