Mum has 8 weeks to live but since stopping treatment seems b

My mum has stage 4 melanoma cancer and this is now in her brain as leptomeningeal disease. She had two lots of nivolumab immunotherapy and the Drs have said it's not working and to stop treatment.

They have now passed her to hospice care and said she has 7-8 weeks.

This was 2 weeks ago and I have never seen her so well as she is today for a long while. She went out for lunch and drank wine and is full of chat.

I want to believe they gave got it wrong as at the moment it doesnt seem like she is going to die anytime soon.

Could this be her body feeling good after the cancer meds are leaving her system?

Could she have a sudden decline?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Lisa

  • Hello Lisa,

l appreciate how many emotions are fighting within you at this sad time, and the uphill struggle to maintain your equilibrium, whilst trying to make the most of the time left to share with her,so its good to read you are sharing some special moments.

Very often people nearing the end of life have a brief period where they rally, and lve always known it as being referred to as the Golden Time,a chance to enjoy and leave good memories behind, and for the sufferer to put head, heart and mind in order.

As you have rightly pointed out the heavy medication discontinuation will allow your Mum to take the maximum benefit from her current situation, which hopefully will continue for a while longer before a hopefully peaceful descent away from her loved ones.

Its hard losing your Mum,and the knowledge that this inevietable does little to make it any easier when the time comes, but they never really leave you,l felt my Mums presence come to me today whilst doing some building work, and had a chuckle to myself as l know wherever she is,those around her will surely know all about,

                                                                                             Take care,

                                                                                                              David
