Help with food

Hi all, not sure if this is an old inactive forum- I'll try anyway! :)

My dad is recovering from throat cancer and he currently has a feeding tube (around 14 weeks post last radiotherapy treatment)

his doctor says he must eat normal food but his taste buds are so messed up that the taste of everything is making him instantly sick-wondering if anyone else had this issue and any tips on how to get around it?

thanks in advance

  • Hi ang,

my husband has stage 4 lung cancer metastasised to his brain and bones (Jan 19) - he went through first and second line treatments with temporary successes and is now on a drug trial as part of a new arm of the Matrix trial. He has lost 11 kg in 8 weeks as everything tastes "sweet" and has no appetite or desire to eat.... he has been given "Fortisipp" fortified drinks which he appears to tolerate well ( various flavours) as a supplement to what I can get him to eat. He tolerates soups and soft food like a breakfast of chia seeds with almond milk. He has also managed vegetables well and lean meat cooked and added to soups. Pancakes with soft fillings too? Avoid extremes of flavours and listen to his responses when food is being prepared. Wishing him and you best of luck,

  • Thanks Andrena

Sending you lots of love and strength ️

  • Totally agree with this, Mum also has stage 4 lung cancer and Fortisip and Ensure high calorie shakes (300 calories per shake, 3 a day is giving her all the calories she needs plus juices and small mouthfuls of food here and there). You can get the compact ones which are around 3 mouthfuls a bottle. Also you can get these on prescription from your oncologist.

    Good luck xx

  • Hi Faye, uch he isn't great...his recovery seems to have plateaud...he still has his feeding tube and isn't eating anything really..he is still being sick with most food...he has been trying small bits of jelly but it's very painful for him. He is also now very anxious and struggles to relax...he spends a lot of time walking up and down the hall! You feel so helpless. How is your mum doing?
