Mum with brain mets is confused and angry

My mum was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002.

In 2012 it returned in her bones and before long was found in her brain. She was on capcetabine for 6 years until it stopped working in 2019 (at this point braun mets had disappeared). She moved onto abemedaciclib with fulvestrant until June this year when brain mets were found again. She had radiotherapy in July. This really knocked her mental health but by September she was ready to start chemo again. Unfortunately she became jaundiced and had to have a billary stent inserted.

Recovery from jaundice has been slow and in the last few days she has developed confusion and ended up being taken to hospital at the weekend.

She's very confused and angry with us for putting her in hospital where brain mets have progressed and she has a slight infection. She is refusing antibiotics and it's really hard to see the very sudden change in her and the confusion that has developed. Have others got experience of this or advice to give?

  • Hello Englishfrog

I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's diagnosis and the recent decline that she has experienced. It sounds like it's been a difficult time for you all.

It's not uncommon for some patients to experience confusion and anger and this can be for many reasons including infection and medication as well as the cancer.
Do talk to the hospital staff about your concerns. It may be that they are able to offer you some reassurance about the situation.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses for some advice then you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

    Best wishes,
