Whipple with pork allergy

Hello, my mum has just had the whipple procedure. Taken part of her liver, stomach, all her pancreas, gall bladder and bile duct. She is diabetic and getting the diabetes medication levels right has been a little awkward but her real problem is terrible stomach upsets whuch are caused by her allergy to anything with pork in it. This has nothing to do with religion, we are all CofE. She has had this allergy all her life. Apparently the tablets (enzyms) she now has to take have pork derived products in them. She now has a very embarrasing digestion problem and the hospital will neither allow her home nor can find an alternative to the medication she must take constantly. Anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Hi Collibosher,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. This sounds like a difficult situation. Unfortunately I'm not able to advise on this - it should really be your mum's doctor or specialist who is best placed to advise, but it sounds like you're struggling to get answers from them. Make sure you've discussed it to the fullest extent with them, so you know what the potential options are, as it's of course important that your mum is not in pain or discomfort with this.

I hope you're able to find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
