How long without water?

Hi everyone,

Im currently caring for my uncle who is in very late stages of liver cancer. He's at the stage where he cannot move, talk or swallow.

We have been feeding him tiny amounts of water via a small sterile sponge provided by the district nurse.

Today is Wednesday and he has been like this for 6 days now.

He is urinating still, and we're being told for the last 3 days that his passing is very close.

How can someone in such a condition survive on literally half a cup of water for 6 days :(

Im only curious as me and my family are really struggling with caring for him and unsure how long we can do it :(

  • Hi,

I am sorry to hear of your uncle. If safe to do so it may be worth asking the nurse for your uncle to be fed fluid intravenously if he cannot drink by mouth? Also keeping his mouth moist is important. This may overall help your uncle be more comfortable. Also, ensuring he is getting 'palliative care' is important. It is so difficult to go through. Thinking of you and your family.
