Dexamethasone For End of Life

My dad was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer in June. He had been having issues with his stomach since Dec/Jan. He was able to do 25 radiation sessions and 3 chemo sessions however he was so sick from the treatment, and if I could go back in time I'd tell him not to do the treatment as we were always told it would not prolong his life and would just give him better quality of life for the time he had left. He has been on Dexamethasone for the past month (two tablets daily for two weeks which was reduced to one tablet daily for two weeks). He finishes the last tablet tomorrow and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of what to expect. Or how long did their loved ones last after they came off the steroids.

  • Hello Grievingalready

I'm sorry to hear about your Dad's recent diagnosis. It's understandable that you're feeling worried about how his condition may change once he finishes this treatment.
Did the Consultant or specialist nurse give you any indication about what the next steps may be? Or does your Dad have another appointment in the pipeline?

I wonder if you might find it helpful to have a chat with one of our nurses. I'm sure that they will be able offer you some support and information. If you'd like to speak to them then they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
