Lung cancer electrolyte imbalance

Hi, my mum has advanced lung cancer (NSCLC), spread to spine and lymph nodes when diagnosed last year. Recently we found out it has spread to the brain and adrenal glands. She's gone downhill so much in the last couple of weeks. Very breathless and weak. The change since last month is heartbreaking.

She was in hospital last week (oxygen v low), they also discovered severe electrolyte imbalances. She's on the edge of diabetes (probably exacerbated by the steroids) but they're also concerned about low sodium. Does anyone have a clue what's going on? I know the prognosis isn't good, but I'm very alarmed by the sudden deterioration. It seems like her whole body is ceasing to function properly.

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Karen although I'm sorry about the decline in your mum's health.

Her medical team are the only ones who can really say what this means so if you have your mum's permission do try and see if you can have another chat with them about this and get them to explain.

Our cancer nurses are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m if you'd like to discuss this with them as well.

    Best wishes to you both,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
